Solidarity with the UFCW!

For a National Health Care System!

Also available as a leaflet you can hand out on the picket lines of the UFCW strike!

As over 80,000 UFCW workers strike nationwide, the issues of union rights and healthcare are at the top of the agenda for the labor movement and working people in general. While the government pursues a failed foreign policy abroad, unions and working Americans are under attack here at home. Americans spend far more on healthcare than any other industrialized country, and yet millions are unable to go to the doctor for a check up. In the richest country on earth, 45 million are without healthcare coverage, and those who do have it have to pay extortionary rates for even the most basic plans. Unions, which in the past were able to assure decent health benefits for their members, are now being told by rich CEOs that they will have to pay far more out of pocket. At the same time, pharmaceutical corporations and hospitals are raking in billions in profits. Those who say there is no money to provide universal health care are the same ones who benefit from a system in which millions labor for peanuts while a handful at the top pocket millions.

Enough is enough! The growing strike of the grocery workers is the opening shot of the Labor Movement’s fight back to recover all of the gains and concessions lost in the past 50 years. The entire Labor Movement must unite in solidarity with their brothers and sisters of the UFCW! The demand for decent health coverage is only the beginning. Workers around the country, unionized and non-unionized need to unite to fight against the bosses’ plans to strip us of our basic rights - the right to a decent job with full benefits; the right to healthcare; the right to universal education for our children; the right to unionize without fear of losing our jobs. It’s time to set things right: working people’s health before corporate profits!
