Defeat the reactionary military coup in Honduras – Mass mobilisation in the streets and general strike! Photo by dhw20500 on Flickr. The coup in Honduras highlights once again that even mild reforms within the capitalist system cannot be tolerated by the local oligarchies in Latin America and their imperialist masters. But Venezuela teaches that if the masses mobilise reaction can be stopped. Now is the time to mobilise the full force of the Honduran workers and poor.

Iran: regime steps up terror – a general strike is needed! Some on the left are questioning whether the movement in Iran is a progressive one. They have been taken in by propaganda that states that the movement is all an “imperialist plot” to overthrow the Islamic regime. This ignores the very essence of what is happening in Iran, which is the beginning of a revolution. What is required to move everything forward now is decisive action by the working class.

Iran: how can the movement go forward? What we are witnessing in Iran is a full-blown popular revolution. However, in order to set its stamp on the movement, the working class must participate in the front line. The movement will stand or fall to the degree that the working class is able to lead it.

Monster demonstration in teheran: the uprising continues. Photo by .faramarz.The stormy street demonstrations in Iran are continuing and gathering strength. Anti-government protesters held another big rally in central Tehran today (Wednesday), which, to judge from photographs we have just received, has dwarfed even the massive demonstrations of the last few days. It defied renewed calls from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader, to keep off the streets. Faced with vast protests, the ruling regime in Tehran is being pulled in opposite directions.

Iranian RevolutionAll the objective conditions for revolution as outlined by Lenin have matured in Iran. The events of the past few days mark the beginning of the Iranian revolution, which will unfold over a whole period. This is due to the lack of a mass revolutionary party capable of leading the masses today. But the conditions to build such a force have also matured. Workers and youth in Iran will be looking for the genuine ideas of revolutionary socialism, of Marxism.

BossnappingLuc Rousselet, who works for Minnesota-based 3M, recently told reporters that talks between his company and its employees were a good thing. This, however, was only after he was kept in his office for more than 24 hours by workers he was intending to fire. Rousselet, who manages one of 3M’s French factories, was described as a “scoundrel boss” by the workers, who demanded negotiations surrounding their layoffs. This case, along with similar situations across France and in other parts of Europe, has been dubbed a “bossnapping.”

Women fight backWe are living in one of the most turbulent periods in history. The economic crisis, through its sheer scale and reach, is bringing about a wholesale change in the consciousness of working people the world over. The contradictions and weaknesses of this system are becoming plainly evident as capitalism buckles under its own weight. As always, it is the poor, the oppressed, and the workers who must shoulder this weight in order to hold up the privileges of the rich. Working women in particular have borne the brunt of this burden.

Venezuela Expropriates Cargill Plant Print E-mail

CargillAs scarcity of food products was a problem for Venezuelans in 2007 and 2008, a situation was created that could undermine the support foro the Bolivarian government.  The Venezuelan government was unable to solve this problem, which contributed to the defeat on the referendum on constituional reform in December 2007.  As a result, a campaign was launched on Chavez's direct intiative to solve the problem.

The campaign proved that speculation, hoarding, and smuggling on a mass scale caused the scarcity. Later investigations found that deliberate sabotage was being carried out by the oligarchy.  As a result of such sabotage, Chavez announced the expropriation of Cargill on March 3rd.
