The newly formed Student Union of Brown University (SUBU) held its first general assembly (GA) meeting on 5-03-07. This founding meeting took place during one of the busiest and most hectic periods in the school year, amid the lead up to finals and everything else which flows from the end of the academic year. Despite this, the meeting was able to sustain a quorum for over two hours, with members packed in, sitting on a hard wood floor. |

"The terrible events of
September 11, 2001 marked a turning point in the history of the United
States and the whole world. Overnight, it became impossible for ordinary
U.S. citizens to imagine that what was happening in the outside world
was no concern of theirs. A general sense of insecurity and apprehension
seized the national psychology. Suddenly, the world became a hostile
and dangerous place. Ever since September 11, Americans have been trying
to make sense of the kind of world that could produce such horrors."

In May the director of the CIA Porter Goss was forced to resign. He was then replaced by General Michael Hayden. This is no routine change. It is part of a wider operation. The US capitalist state is being tuned up before being thrust into battle again - both at home and abroad. In response to the developing upswing of the class struggle, this war machine is being tooled to confront the working class, oppressed, and poor of the world.

On May 19th, protesters gathered outside a $500 a
plate fundraiser dinner being held at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Providence,
RI. The fundraiser was for Lincoln Chafee,
the incumbent Senator, who was the only member of the GOP to vote against the
war on Iraq. Chafee is not running primarily as an anti-war
candidate, but rather as a "moderate" imperialist, with the aim of finishing up
one adventure before embarking on another...

There's no doubt about it: the simmering discontent accumulating beneath the surface of American society is starting to bubble to the surface. As millions of immigrant workers, their families, and supporters participated in the historic "Day Without an Immigrant", a changing mood is emerging across the country.

The recent blackout on the East coast highlights the inability of the capitalist class to provide even the most basic services in the heart of imperialism. |

As we celebrate the holiday season and say goodbye to the year 2002, it is also a time when we look back on the preceding year and make our resolutions for the next. 2002 has been a tumultuous and crisis-ridden year, marked on the one hand by continuing economic stagnation and on the other by the looming war with Iraq. It has also been a very turbulent year politically. |

As the results of the mid-term elections come in - an apparent sweeping victory for President Bush's Republican Party - many questions must be answered. How and why did this happen? What will it mean for working people and activists on the left? Does this mean Americans actually like George Bush and his policies? |

Not content to wait until his inauguration, President George W. Bush and his administration have already launched an all-out offensive to “reform” the Social Security system. Bush, the Republican Party and their Wall Street cronies are now desperately trying to convince the American public that the nation’s old age and disability pension system is in crisis and that privatization is necessary to save it. Nothing could be further from the truth. The only crisis facing Social Security is a ravenous reactionary government determined to rob millions of their right to retirement in order to swell the coffers of the world’s largest financial banks. From issue 16 of Socialist Appeal. By David May. |

New London, Connecticut is a small historic city, but on April fourth it will be seen globally as the location of the next Mock Terror Attack. For an entire week in April of 2005, a carefully scripted stunt will unfold. Homeland Security has chosen to unload a portion of its fortune on this drill; intended to train the first responders, top officials, and medical facilities of New London, Ct. if there were to be a mass crisis. However, there is nothing fake about the terror that will be brought upon the citizens of this inconspicuous city. |

By David May As the imperialist occupation of Iraq drags endlessly on, the situation in the United States itself is one of a continuing jobless economic “recovery” while the Republican-controlled government loots the treasury for the benefit of the wealthiest Americans. Coming into office with a budget surplus in the trillions of dollars, the Bush Administration has successfully emptied the world’s largest coffers - and then some. All this in less than five years.

It is no secret that we live in an age where the average working person has two things constantly looming over them. Those two omnipresent worries are to maintain a steady paycheck and to maintain one's health to keep oneself in a condition to get that paycheck. So, it is no surprise that the new Medicare drug benefit fiasco has the older generation of the U.S. working class worried - very worried. |

History has made it clear: the capitalist elite seems most happy while the masses suffer. Things that are detrimental to the lives of the working majority go to the financial benefit of the ruling few. Things such as war, pollution, price gouging, unemployment and natural disasters are beneficial to them; while slowly killing working people and the environment. The war in Iraq has made unbelievable profits for the oil and construction industries. Every dioxin molecule and greenhouse gas in the depleting atmosphere is a penny saved for the industrial capitalists. It is no surprise then, that the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina have become a beacon for capitalist greed and exploitation. |

With support from the Democratic leadership, Congress passed the Bush education plan, which will require public schools to administer basic skills tests in math and reading to students in grades 3 to 8 by the 2005-2006 school year. The rhetoric used by George W. "leave-no-child-behind" Bush suggests that he supports the goal of closing the academic achievement gap between black and white students, and between poor and 'middle class' white students. Is it possible to eliminate most of the academic achievement gap without lowering the bar for high achievers? Is the Bush plan actually designed to close the gap? |

The events of the morning of September 11th have shaken the entire world. One single terrorist attack has not only shocked masses of people out of their daily lives, it has crippled the world economy. Already, the Mayor of New York City, Rudolph Giuliani, has stated that the dead will be counted in the thousands. |
