The war in Iraq is the most
important issue on the minds of American workers and youth. There is an entire generation
whose world-view has been entirely shaped by the epoch of war, revolution,
and counter-revolution through which we are living. Are the Democrats really doing anything to change the situation?

The end of the 19th century saw the birth of imperialism. Germany, France, Britain and Belgium struggled to gain possession of markets, territory, raw materials and spheres of influence. As Germany emerged as a great power after victory in the Franco-Prussian War, so the U.S. would emerge as a great power after the victory of the North in the Civil War. Threatened with mass layoffs and the closure of the plant, workers at the Delphi plant in Cadiz, Spain have occupied the factory, demanding that it be nationalized under workers’ control, calling for a city-wide general strike to stop the layoffs from happening. The attacks of the multinational bosses against the auto industry is a worldwide phenomenon. We must stand by our union brothers and sisters internationally - their struggle is our struggle! |

As the first commissioned officer in the US military to refuse re-deployment to Iraq, 1st Lieutenant Ehren Watada has shown through his example that the now overwhelming opposition to the war among the broader population is spreading right into the heart of the U.S. military machine. It is the duty of all class-conscious workers and youth to support those in the military opposed to this war of conquest and exploitation.

On February 9, 1950 Senator
Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin claimed that there were no fewer than
two hundred Communists in the State Department. This outrageous allegation
unleashed a witch-hunt against everyone who was even slightly “tainted”
with left wing, progressive or even vaguely democratic opinions in public
life. The hysteria that accompanied this campaign closely resembled
the kind of pathological collective hysteria of the notorious Salem
witch trials of the 17th century.

Originally published in 1975, this article was an answer to Chrysler's plans to sack thousands of workers in Britain. It clearly posed the demand for nationalization under workers' control and management. The fact that over 30 years later we are yet again faced with the same situation, highlights our point that there is simply no solution to the problems of working people within the narrow limits of capitalism. We are told that we can be part of the "team" if we play by the rules - but the bosses change the rules whenever they want! The bosses will always put their profits above the interests of the workers and society as a whole. Under capitalism, the "song remains the same". Workers need a new tune - nationalization under workers' democratic control! |

On February 14th, the DaimlerChrysler
AG Corporation announced sweeping plant closings and job cuts for its
U.S. operations which will go into effect in 2008 and 2009. The company
announced the closing of the Newark, Delaware plant as well as the cutting
a total of 13,000 jobs across the US and Canada by 2009, mainly through
shift elimination. The Cleveland, Ohio parts distribution center will
be idled as well. As part of this "restructuring" plan, the
company will cut U.S. production capacity by 400,000 units through 2009.
If this wasn't enough, DaimlerChrysler also announced that it is exploring
options to sell off the Chrysler division altogether. No wonder many
workers are calling these announcements the "St. Valentine's Day
Massacre".

Instead of listening to the advice of Baker and the Iraq Study Group to seek an exit strategy, Bush prefers to up the stakes, increasing the number of troops in Iraq and threatening both Syria and Iran. He is coming into conflict with the ruling class he is supposed to represent. Herein lies a potential political crisis of major proportions in the USA. |
