Michigan’s Draconian labor laws make it illegal for public employees to strike. Teachers can be fined a day’s wages and their union fined $5,000 for each day they don’t work. This is the way the state treats its workers.

With the occupation of Iraq spiraling out of control and growing increasingly unpopular among the majority of Americans, military recruiting would seem to be as winning an endeavor as selling tickets to get on board a sinking ship. It therefore comes as no surprise that military recruiters have been falling well short of fulfilling their quotas.

The Hands Off Venezuela Campaign and the Workers International League are pleased to announce that Miguel Campos, an activist with Venezuela's FRETECO (Revolutionary Front of Workers in Occupied and Worker-controlled Factories) will be in St. Louis, MO, this weekend (November 4 and 5) to speak at the National Rank and File Conference organized by the Labor Action Coalition.

Before the break for the mid-term elections, both Houses of Congress voted to approve a bill, The Military Commissions Act of 2006, heavily pushed for by the Bush administration. Although cloaked in the rhetoric of the “war on terror, in reality this bill will give the executive branch enormous powers, including the ability to suspend the rights of whomever it decides.

Each year, Forbes magazine presents readers with a list of the 400 richest U.S. citizens. As usual, no Socialist Appeal readers were on the list. And in 2006, for the first time, all 400 of these people were billionaires.

It is a basic truth that the United States is the only industrialized nation in the world to lack a comprehensive, universal health care system.  And the basis for this fact is that health care is a multi-billion dollar concern for pharmaceutical and medi-corporate businesses whose prime motivation is bottom line sales and profits over health.

A Panamerican Gathering in Defence of Rights, Land Reform and Industries has been called in Joinville, SC, Brazil, for December 8-10. The meeting is being called mainly by the movement of occupied factories and is the continuation of the First Latin American Gathering of Occupied Factories which took place in Caracas in November 2005.
