Women and Revolution - On International Working Women's Day
Written by Miriam Martin in Vancouver
Thursday, 08 March 2007
Mainstream feminism has attempted to reduce March 8th to a vague and depoliticised celebration of the female sex as a homogenous group, but to socialists and working class women the world over, it is a day for mobilizing, a day of class struggle. It was in fact first launched by Clara Zetkin at the second International Conference of Women Socialists, held in Copenhagen in 1910, with the aim of mobilizing women for the struggle against bourgeois domination.  See also our section on Marxism and Women.

Written by James Holt
Saturday, 03 March 2007
Teamsters LogoIn the recent election for union leadership, members of the Teamsters union were confronted with a choice.  On the one side stood Jimmy Hoffa Jr., the incumbent president, who campaigned on the basis of forming a “partnership” with the employers and whose family has had long-standing relations with organized crime.  On the other side stood the challenger, Tom Leedham, who has pressed for mobilizing the membership to act in their own interests and strike, if that proves necessary, in order to win gains.

The war in Iraq is the most important issue on the minds of American workers and youth. Imperialism

US ImperialismThe end of the 19th century saw the birth of imperialism. Germany, France, Britain and Belgium struggled to gain possession of markets, territory, raw materials and spheres of influence. As Germany emerged as a great power after victory in the Franco-Prussian War, so the U.S. would emerge as a great power after the victory of the North in the Civil War.  Originally published in the book Marxism and the USA, published by and available from Wellred

The Case of Lt. Watada
Written by Karl Belin
Tuesday, 27 February 2007
Lt. Watada SpeaksAs the first commissioned officer in the US military to refuse re-deployment to Iraq, 1st Lieutenant Ehren Watada has shown through his example that the now overwhelming opposition to the war among the broader population is spreading right into the heart of the U.S. military machine. It is the duty of all class-conscious workers and youth to support those in the military opposed to this war of conquest and exploitation.
