North American Marxist School Points the Way Forward

Over 50 comrades attended the second annual North American Marxist School in Montreal last weekend. Organized by supporters of La Riposte Quebec, Fightback Canada and Socialist Appeal USA, the school was a resounding success that saw a 30% rise in attendance from the previous year. This year’s sharp increase in attendance is a reflection of the revolutionary epoch we have entered.

With the Arab revolutions, the Euro crisis, the mass movement in Greece, and the Occupy movement, more and more workers and youth are looking for a socialist alternative to capitalist austerity. La Riposte Quebec, Fightback Canada, and Socialist Appeal USA are organizing their second annual Marxist school in Northeast North America to provide Marxist answers to arm militant activists in the struggles to come.

The Death of Kim Jong-il

The world’s attention is once again focused on North Korea. This is not due to a new nuclear test, imperialist saber-rattling, or a military clash with South Korea along the world’s most militarized border. This time, the reason is potentially even more explosive: the death of Kim Jong-il.

Arab revolution reaches Israel – next step, a general strike!

Tel Aviv demonstrationIncredible scenes in Tel Aviv. On Saturday, August 7, over 300,000 took to the streets of a city with a population of less than half a million. Other demonstrations also took place on Saturday, with 30,000 gathering in Jerusalem, and thousands gathering in other cities across the country. The total figure of demonstrators is difficult to estimate, but it could be anything between 400,000 and half a million, in a country of 7.7 million inhabitants. Amongst the familiar demands for “social justice”, a number of banners could be seen bearing the slogan, “Resign, Egypt is here.” Tellingly, resign was written in Arabic.

The political crisis and the crisis of capitalism

As the earthquake of economic crisis sweeps across the globe, the political establishment in country after country is being shaken to the core. “Strong” governments have been exposed as, in fact, being extremely weak, both at the ballot box and on the streets. The ruling class is beginning to lose its political grip on society and people are beginning to question the traditional pillars that society has rested upon for centuries.

Should We Pay for the Crisis?

The World Bank, IMF, and EU are subjecting Greece to the most shameless blackmail. They say: either accept draconian cuts in your living standards, or else we will refuse to hand over the next tranche of 12 billion euros.

Imperialists Aim to Strangle Arab Revolution

Libyan RevolutionFollowing hot on the heels of the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions, the masses of Libya, particularly in the East of the country, rose up to overthrow their own dictator. However, what started as a genuine revolution against Gaddafi has now been taken over by reactionary bourgeois elements, backed by the CIA. In the newly formed Interim Government, direct representatives of imperialist interests have been promoted to leading positions.
