The most advanced capitalist country on earth has an estimated 500,000 homeless people—a quarter of them children. 47 million Americans live below the poverty line. 48 million people live in households that are food insecure. Unemployment relative to population still hasn't reached pre-2008 crisis levels. New graduates are finding it much harder to get a job that pays enough to cover basic costs, and the current student debt is at more than $1 trillion. This is the real state of the United States today, the crown jewel of capitalism. The future for the vast majority looks bleak and most people are learning the hard way, that the current generation will have a lower living standard than their parents.

wil1Across the Atlantic, Europe is in crisis, unable to deal with the humanitarian crisis of immigration caused by their own imperialist wars. The capitalist system is unable to pull the continent decisively out of the economic death waters. Stagnation and political crisis are omnipresent from Greece to the UK.

During the current election campaign in the US, all politicians say they are going to make things better. However, though we support any measure that positively improves things, a handful of reforms will not be enough to significantly improve the quality of life of the majority. The capitalist system itself needs to be overthrown and replaced with a society in which politics, the economy, and social welfare are democratically controlled and run by the workers themselves in the interests and for the benefit of the majority. This is not only entirely possible with the level of resources, technology, and development we have today, it is an urgent necessity for the development of humanity as a whole.

Interest in socialism has risen dramatically in recent months, as millions of people, especially the youth, are questioning the current system. However, socialism doesn't appear out of nowhere. To overthrow capitalism requires the actions of the organized working class, guided by the ideas of Marxism. The International Marxist Tendency is working to build an organization to prepare for the events to come and to connect with all of those interested in socialism. We are serious about the task ahead of us, and have made the decision to rent an office in New York City, the finance and media capital of the world. This will be a centralized location from which we can coordinate our work locally, nationally, and internationally, as well as expand our bookstore selections and MarxistBooks.com, and to host meetings to discuss ideas and perspectives for the class struggle. We have no rich donors or backer and are funded entirely by our members and supporters. This financial independence guarantees our political independence. But we still live under capitalism and New York City is not inexpensive. We need all the support we can get to make this a reality!
