NEWWILLOGO1SmallerAs we begin 2015, we want to thank everyone who contributed to our work last year. Thanks to the sacrifice of dozens of people, Socialist Appeal was able to raise more than $25,000 towards our Fighting Fund last year. This year, we have the same goal, to raise $25,000 and more, if possible, to help spread the ideas of Marxism—in the USA and around the world.

Last year was full of exciting developments. There were huge demonstrations across the US against murders by the police. In Mexico, a movement arose to protest the disappearance of the 43 students. Students were also on the move in Hong Kong and Chile. There were large demonstrations in Brazil around the World Cup. In South Africa, the mighty union NUMSA is calling to establish a political movement to challenge capitalism, and in Italy, there were large protests and strikes by the workers. In the Japanese national elections, the Communist Party almost doubled its vote from 2012.

In Scotland, many workers used the referendum for independence as a way to vote against the British ruling class and establishment. This has led to a radicalization of youth and workers and the potential to grow the ideas of Marxism like never before. In Spain, Podemos, a party that originated from the indignados movement, is at the top of some polls today. Even right-wing political commentators like David Brooks of the New York Times admit that capitalism has not improved the conditions of the people in the former Stalinist countries. Capitalism is a worse nightmare than Stalinism for these people.

Greece will soon have an election, and Syriza, the Coalition of the Radical Left, is likely to form the new government. The leaders of Syriza are trying to find a “compromise with capitalism.” But the only way forward is for Syriza to mobilize the working class for power, cancel the debt, and take over the large banks and corporations. A victory for the Greek workers would start an international process that would spread throughout Europe, Africa, the Middle East and beyond.

The IMT and Socialist Appeal must expand our work. Our comrades in Pakistan are doing terrific work, but are under attack from reactionary forces there. Our comrades in Spain are bringing the ideas of Marxism to Podemos and the trade unions. In Italy, the comrades are expanding with new youth initiatives and a new paper that will come out every two to three weeks. The Nigerian Marxists are building their forces under very difficult conditions. Our comrades in Greece, Britain, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Brazil, and many other areas are growing. The Canadian Marxists have also gained more support and were able to rent their first office space—something we aim to do as well in the USA this year!

Please be generous again this year. Every contribution, no matter how large or small, is greatly appreciated. If you read our website and/or paper and have not yet contributed, or want to contribute again, please consider helping us out. Forward to $25,000 in 2015 and forward to Socialism!
